Jeff, I loved reading your story. I leave for 16 days in Ireland on Saturday Aug 6. We are attempting to play 15 rounds starting at Connamera and playing the links courses up and across Northern Ireland, Donnegal and finishing in Dublin with the European Club.
At 61, I’m hoping my back, legs and psyche all hold up.
Can’t wait to try.

Jeff–
Really enjoyed following the road warriors in Ireland. Makes me nostalgic for sure! And speaking of Peter’s new clubs, after the Happiest Man in America threw a 77 at me with his new hybrid iron set, the arms race was on. I am now playing with new Razr hybrids and irons. I now know that feeling you describe as you’re hitting Peter’s hybrid 6 at Carne: easy swing, nice high ball flight, pleasant landing. Money in the pocket. Great job by the Road Warriors!

Hey, Jeff–these video clips are really fun. Sounds as if the Warriors are well into the Irish golf scene. The Irish Open should be awesome. As John Clarkin notes, it’s not often an event with no sponsor and a total purse of 1.5M euros (250K to the winner) would draw four major champions. It’s great to see the loyalty of the great Irish professionals to the country that bred and nurtured them. We wear our loyalty on our sleeves, I am afraid, and not in our pocketbooks.

Have to totally agree with you, Jeff. These guys have been running longer than “Gunsmoke” and their corporate sponsors don’t know when to quit, except that the execs like smoozing with these guys and some of the demographics may still work for some industries.

Yes, while these guys can still play, their act is getting old like a bad rerun that just won’t go away. Between the lackluster coverage this show got old a decade ago. Other than the sponsors and their clients, the only other people in the golf galleries seem to be the guys from The Golf Channel. Yes, it’s time to pull their plug – booooring! Until then, it’s the best mulligan going.

The site is simply magnificent to say the least, a feel of Scotland, Ireland and sense of history like this course has always been here.
Well done piece it reflects the true identity and character that is so characteristic of so many great course throughout the U.S. which are really works of art. The essence of this game is not only the mystery of mastering it but the experience we have at so many wonderful places that are etched in our memories. Golf is truly a journey and this is a place to play.

Had the same experience at a night club in Vegas. We had an unkown 15% entertainment charge for a really horrible band that was not advertised. We told the manager to pound sand. Next time I bring cash and not go there again.
And I sure as hell won\’t go to Vdara.

I’m going over my books and remembered with pleasure reading Beyond the Fairway and What The River Saw, and I “just happened” on your website and reread the piece about the Slide. What a great description and as far as I remember ACCURATE. I congratulate you on your wise omission of some events at that last campsite. As they say in Italian, “Non c’ero; ma se c’ero, dormivo.” (I wasn’t there, but if I was there, I was sleeping.”

That was a great trip, and I certainly enjoyed getting to know you.

I hope you are well. A lot happens in 15 years: I’m happily remarried and contemplating retiring some time from science teaching. Forty-six years, and counting!

Twenty years or so ago I had the most extraordinary experience at Gearhart Golf Links. I was on my way to the Long Beach Peninsula and took a detour south to get in a quick round on a beautiful mid-week summer day. I joined one other player on the first tee, who was pulling a beat-up trolley with a Goodwill assortment of club peeking our from the bag. After I hit I noticed a little dog walking along the right side of the fairway, keeping up with my playing partner. When we got to the green the dog ambled up near to the hole, positioning himself well off the line of either putt but close enough to see the action. He watched both balls into the cup, then headed to the second tee. Same routine for a couple of holes, but then he started taking short cuts, heading from the greens to the turning point of the next hole, like a good forecaddie. What’s up, I asked? His master said that dog had probably walked a thousand rounds with him. He used to run around a bit but he’s gettting old so he focuses on the part of the game he likes most, which is watching the ball fall into the cup. Perhaps he imagines fetching it. After 9 holes, the dog departed. “He can’t play 18 anymore,” his master said. “We’ll have a drink together when I get home. He gets a little beer in his bowl.”

Jeff, great article! We had the chance to play in November shortly after you! Our experience was identical to yours! Simple amazing. I just stumbled across this article and man did it stoke a fire of just how good that place is! We played out there for roughly 8 hrs. BBQ up some food when we took a break. Played back to the car for beers. Honestly the best day of golf in my whole life! Thanks again letting me relive that day!

Jeff – Very enjoyable article on my favorite course. I have been a member for the past 13 odd years and I think you captured the essence well. Dick Kasperson and I are old high school buddies – both of us having visited our 50th class reunion this year.

In joining EG&CC I have recaptured my fascination with golf and find myself seeking the perfect round and hopeful to someday see a single-digit handicap – regardless of the betting losses I will most likely incur.

Thanks for the story – I can truthfully state that I have never had a bad day playing there – it is a wonderful “walk in the park”.
